A Negative Calorie Food List

To make a negative calorie food list, we must be precisely clear on what we mean. There has been some confusion about this phrase. Some have thought that this kind of food contains no calories at all. This can't be right as long as all kinds of food contains at least some energy.

We're going to present you with a list of this kind of food. If you follow it, not necessarly without any other kinds of food, it will increase metabolism naturally, and the result will be weight loss - especially compared with eating a meal where these foods are not included.

Food

Now, it's time for a definition. When we say nagative calorie food, we mean foods which contain so little energy that the body actually uses more energy to digest and absorb the nutrients. So if you subtract calories you'll burn from the calories you eat, the result will be negative. Only by digesting the food you have eaten, there will be a net loss of energy or a negative energy balance. This is what must happen if you want to lose weight but with this food you don't have to do anything but eat it to accomplish that.

A Negative Calorie Food List

You can also eat protein in combination with such food. Good protein will help you control your appetite as well as increase your metabolism because the total amount of calories are not reduced too much.

Here is the list:

Vegetables

Fennel, aubergine, gourd, broccoli, leek, cabbage, lettuce, carrots, marrow, cauliflower, peppers, celery, radish, chicory, spinach, cress, tomato, cucumber, turnip.

Fruits

Apricot, mandarin orange, blackberry, melon canteloupe, blackcurrant, peaches, clementines, plums, damsons, raspberry, grapefruit. rhubarb, guava, strawberry, honeydew melon, tangerine, lemon, watermelon.

Potassium - How to Apply This Essential Nutrient To Your Garden Plants

Potassium is one of the three macro elements essential to plant growth and development. The macro elements, which together with potassium include nitrogen and phosphorus, are so called, not because they are more important than the micro elements, but rather because they are needed and consumed in large quantities. It is important to take note of three points here.

*Firstly, by being required and consumed in large amounts, available potassium is liable to be lacking in certain circumstances.

Nutrient

*On the other hand, high concentrations of potassium are liable to reduce the availability to the plants' roots of micro elements such as magnesium. This element by playing an essential role in photosynthesis is no less vital to plant physiology than potassium itself.

Potassium - How to Apply This Essential Nutrient To Your Garden Plants

*Thirdly, while potassium is easily leached from light sandy soils, it becomes attached to mineral clay particles in heavy soils, by virtue of its positive electrical charge. This means that uncontrolled applications of potassium fertilizer, can significantly increase soil salinity, the gravity of which should not be underestimated both for the health of the plants in the short term, and the soil in the long term.

The question for us gardeners therefore is how to ensure adequate supplies of potassium without affecting either the chemical balance of the soil or its salinity. The safest method is to feed the plants by regularly adding well-rotted organic matter to the soil like compost or commercially prepared humus. Compost as it breaks down to a mineral state, slowly releases nutrients in the soil, including potassium. Furthermore by improving the soil's aeration and expanding its micro biotic activity, mineral uptake of all essential elements is enhanced.

Before planting a new garden, carrying out a soil test will reveal the concentrations of potassium present. If these are below what's required, then adding compost may not by itself be enough to cover the shortfall. When I set up a garden I normally add slow release fertilizer to the compost and then rely exclusively on organic matter after a year or so. Slow release fertilizer is more expensive than readily soluble fertilizer, but much safer and less environmentally damaging.

Lawns under an intensive growing regime may also require additions of potassium in chemical form. From the point of view of root development, it is important to fertilize both in the autumn in Mediterranean climates, and in the early spring. Again I recommend the use of slow release fertilizer. Make sure, particularly in the autumn that the potassium value, marked by the chemical symbol K, is high relative to the N for nitrogen, and the P for phosphorus.

Nutrient Guide for Endurance Athletes

Body's nutrient need increases with the intensity of exercise or sport that the athlete takes up. In order to keep your performance optimum, make sure that you are fulfilling your nutrient needs as outlined by the following account:

Calcium's recommended dietary intake ranges from 1,000 mg to 1,500 mg daily, and it forms an integral part of the overall nutrient plan. However, in a survey conducted recently, fewer than half of the 10,000 male and female athletes questioned were found to be consuming 1,000 mg of calcium daily. Women who are not consuming adequate calcium are facing a grave threat of Osteoporosis. Research indicates that even male athletes can be affected by osteoporosis due to testosterone deficits, in cases of calcium deficiency.

Nutrient

Iron's importance as a nutrient has to be especially stressed. Low iron levels can be a persistent problem for athletes training for more than six hours per week. In severe cases, they may even experience anemia. Other side effects of low iron stores include an increase in muscle fatigue and a significant reduction in V02max. Iron stores are used up more readily by athletes than by sedentary persons. Nutritional experts recommend 20-25 mg of iron per day for endurance athletes. However, levels higher than 20-25 mg are shown not to be beneficial, and even toxic.

Nutrient Guide for Endurance Athletes

Drop in magnesium can lead to early fatigue, nausea, and muscle cramps. Magnesium salts are constantly lost through sweat and urine. Thus, arises the need for magnesium supplementation for creating a balance overall among all nutrients. Recommended daily intake is 500 to 800 mg for athletes.

Potassium is lost rapidly during exercise at an approximate rate of 200 mg per kilogram of weight lost during exercise. Nutrient supplementation immediately after exercise (less than 2 hours) is absolutely essential, to be administered at a rate of 435 mg for each hour of exercise, but limiting to 5 grams.

Selenium, a nutrient required only in small amounts, is shown to benefit athletes' immune response and help in the repair of cellular damage. 200 mg per day supplementation is considered safe and is crucial for athletes.

Sodium helps in water retention, and prevents dehydration. It also plays a role in ATP production. For extraneous exercises lasting longer than 5 hours, especially in hot weather, a dangerously low sodium level is an imminent threat. Athletes, when involved in such activities, should aim for a nutrient intake of 100 to 300 mg each hour. Most energy drinks can be used for this purpose. For events that are even longer, Electrolyte caps are a better source.

Zinc helps in tissue repair that occurs after exercise. Athletes have a lower serum zinc level as compared to the rest of the population. A fall in zinc levels leads to fatigue and decrease in endurance. Athletes should go for a nutrient intake of 30-60 mg of zinc daily.

Vitamin E is shown to decrease cellular damage in athletes. The daily requirements of vitamin E cannot be obtained through diet alone. A total intake of 400-1200 I.U. should be aimed for.

Studies prove protein needs rise during strenuous exercise. Endurance athletes basically use protein for the maintenance of oxidative metabolism, and for tissue repair. Protein intake that is inadequate, leads to a reduced recovery from exercise, and can hamper wound healing. It is generally recommended that endurance athletes should eat 1.2 to 1.4 g of protein per kg of body weight body. This means that a 55 lb. person should eat about 85-100 grams per day of protein.

Glutamine is an amino acid that helps in the fuelling process of the immune system. Prolonged exercise gradually lowers glutamine levels, which reduces the effectiveness of body's immune system. Glutamine supplementation, after exercise is linked to a lowered risk of infection in athletes. Experts recommend 2.5 grams of glutamine per day.

Food for Diabetics - Good and Bad Food for Diabetics

If you are diabetic, finding the right balance of food can be hard. This article will cover the different foods you should eat and avoid when you have diabetes.

Food to Avoid

Food

Avoid food high in sugar, honey and artificial sweeteners. Use an alternative sweetener like stevia. Foods High in sugar include sweets and chocolate. If you need the occasional piece of chocolate (like most of us!) then try to eat Continental dark chocolate with at-least 75% cocoa solids.

Food for Diabetics - Good and Bad Food for Diabetics

You should also avoid certain types of vegetables including beans, parsnips, carrots and peas. All these are high in starch.
You should also avoid fruits including banana, grapes, strawberries and mangoes.

Avoid types of grains including pasta, rice, barley, corn, wheat and rye and foods that contain ingredients that end in ol or ose. These are mainly types of carbohydrates.

Foods to Eat

Foods you should eat should be high in fibre. A high fibre diet is very important for diabetics. This includes cereals, nuts, fruits, seeds and certain vegetables. Food with fibre in is good for diabetics as it reduces cholesterol and glucose levels.

You should also eat fruits that include grapefruit, peaches, lime and apples. Eat fruit and vegetables gradually throughout the day so your blood sugar level won't suddenly rise. You can also eat seafood of all types preferably boiled, steamed, baked or grilled - Not fried.

Eat white meats like chicken, fish and duck. Although you can eat lamb or beef once or twice a week. Eggs are fine for diabetics but try to avoid the yolk. Cheeses are also fine apart from cottage cheese.

Iron Deficiency - The Most Common Nutrient Deficiency?

Iron is a mineral nutrient present in plants and animals. It is crucial to the human body because it aids in transporting oxygen via the blood throughout all the tissues and cells. This form of iron is called hemoglobin, which is approximately 65 to 75 percent of the iron in the body. Hemoglobin is a protein that forms part of red blood cells. Any surplus iron is stored in your body as reserve. Since iron can only be obtained from the foods we eat, it is vital to consume iron rich meat and vegetables so that the body can absorb the iron from your diet.

When you are not consuming enough sources of iron, your body starts using your reserves. When the reserves are gone too, the blood does not have enough iron and hemoglobin to transport oxygen as necessary. This is called anemia. The World Health Organization flagged anemia as one of the most widespread nutrient deficiencies in the world. Worse, low iron is the number one nutrient deficiency in the United States. Low iron is caused by any or a combination of three factors: low iron in your diet, poor absorption, excessive loss of blood.

Nutrient

The most common low iron symptoms are irritability, short attention span, a constant feeling of fatigue and weakness resulting to fainting or decreased performance at work or school. The body is more susceptible to infection, the tongue swells, and the person is always feeling cold. Infants and young children unfortunately show delayed cognitive development. The above-mentioned symptoms seem generic and vague, so much so that these are often dismissed as laziness or symptoms of stress. The demographics that are at risk are children, teenagers, senior citizens, pregnant women, women of child-bearing age and athletes.

Iron Deficiency - The Most Common Nutrient Deficiency?

The body is not capable of producing iron. Instead, it sources its iron needs from food. There are two types derived from food, non heme iron and heme iron. The non heme type is found in plant-based foods, such as vegetables, seeds, fruits and grains, among others. Heme iron is present in meat, poultry, fish and other animal products.

The body does not absorb the entire iron content of the food you eat. There are three main factors, which affect the amount absorbed by your body. These are: type of iron, the level of your body's reserves and any factors that increase or decrease iron absorption.

The level of your body's reserves is the main determining factor when it comes to the amount of iron you absorb. Low reserves prompt the body to absorb more. With high reserves in place, the body reduces the amount of iron it absorbs.

The type of iron and the presence of absorption inhibitors and enhancers also affect overall absorption. Heme iron is absorbed more efficiently than the non heme type. Foods containing absorption enhancers like vitamin C, increase the absorption of non heme iron, while foods containing absorption inhibitors like tea or coffee reduce absorption.

There are many different ways to treat iron deficiency anemia. The type of treatment depends on the cause of the deficiency and the severity of the anemia. Some of the prescribed treatment may be one or more of the following:

  • Strict diet plan of iron rich foods
  • Medication to treat complications
  • Iron supplementation
  • Iron injections
  • Intravenous iron therapy
  • Blood transfusion

The History Of Italian Food

While some of the most popular dishes associated with the Italian culture include a tempting slice of pizza and a heaping plate of pasta, there is much more to the world of Italian cooking. Throughout the many regions in Italy, the distinctive cuisine of the Italians shines through in a wide-range of eating habits, styles of cooking, and selection of local ingredients. The changing of the times has also influenced Italian food, as the meals served in the pre-Roman era possess both similarities and differences in the cuisine of today.

The culinary history of Italy established a reputation more than 2,000 years ago, which includes an illustrious movement during the Roman Empire. Culturally, food preparation was quite important in the past where flashes of significance have been captured in the only surviving cookbook (Apicius), which dates back to the first century BC.

Food

The spread of Italian food diversity began after the fall of the Roman Empire when individual city states began to uphold separate identities and traditions. Each region began to display its own unique way of cooking, right down to the formation of a meatball to the characteristic cheeses and wine produced in a locale. The north developed Tuscan beef, while black truffles were very popular in Marches. Provolone and mozzarella cheeses developed in the south, as well as a host of interesting citrus fruits.

The History Of Italian Food

Diverse types of bread, variations in pasta, and varying food preparation techniques also differed according to region. The southern regions of Italy embrace hard-boiled spaghetti, while the north often prefers a soft egg noodle. Milan is known for their risotto, while Bologna has a deep history regarding tortellini, and Naples is famous for their pizzas.

Over the years, Italian cuisine has greatly evolved in part because of a wealth of outside influences that have added to its characteristic flavor and appeal. In the beginning, ancient Greek cookery became an integrated part of Italian cuisine. Eventually, a wealth of imports found their way into the kitchens of early Italians, who sent Roman ships to collect a variety of important foods, including wheat, wine, exotic ingredients, and fine spices from around the world. Some ships even traveled to faraway locations, such as China, to bring back edible resources that catapulted the depth and variety of Italian cooking styles.

Coastal regions are known for their developments in delicious fish and seafood dishes. For example, the island of Sardinia supplies a more traditional and simple style of cuisine, which often incorporated delicacies, associated with the sea. Swordfish, lobster, anchovies, sardines, and other Mediterranean treats represent Italian cooking of the area. In Sicily (another island region), a great deal of the cooking drew heavily from North African influences. An Arab influence also affected cuisine on the island and within the rest of the south, especially with the introduction of various spices and sweets, such as the Sicilian ice cream cake called cassata.

As for one of the most popular Italian dishes, while the history books often state that pasta was a product of the Chinese brought back by Venetian merchant, Marco Polo, it was actually a rediscovery of a food item eaten during Etruscan and Roman times. It is believed that the first pasta in Italy was made similar to the noodles of today - from the same durum wheat - which was cooked in ovens instead of boiled in water.

Today, the differences in Italian cooking still show through in the distinctions between the north and the south. Each region still carries their own traditions in cooking that reflects deep history and culture with a never ending supply of main courses, appetizers, and desserts that continuously tempts the taste buds.

The Fungus-Cancer-Sunlight Connection

Could cancer be related to a fungus infection, similar to Candida Albicans?

Microzymes, or microzymas are small moving particles that are indestructible and pervasive, according to Pasteur's rival, Antoine Bechamp. They form the basis for all living tissues in plants, animals and humans and, as Bechamp discovered, they are also the source from which bacteria spring forth, which can destroy the body through illness and disease.

Nutriment

Royal Raymond Rife, like Bechamp before him, also discovered that bacteria and viruses are pleomorphic, that viruses can break apart -- into bacteria-sized particles -- to pass through otherwise impermeable membranes, and then come back together once again. Rod shaped bacteria, Bechamp found, could change form into spheroid and other shapes, depending on the requirements of the local environment.

The Fungus-Cancer-Sunlight Connection

At first Pasteur refused to admit the truth of these observations and deductions, however Madame Victor Henri of the Pasteur Institute found confirmation that Bechamp was right in 1914. Pasteur stubbornly refused to budge until, on his deathbed, he finally confessed: "Bernard is right. The microbe is nothing. The environment is all important."

Claude Bernard, a French physiologist who died in 1878, believed in a cause and effect relationship between deadly germs, infectious microbes, and the inner terrain or environment of the body. Only when the internal terrain was defective in some way, Bernard and later Bechamp believed, could these organisms -- ever-present in even the healthiest people -- take control, causing sickness, ill-health and finally death.

Today, Italian oncologist Tullio Simoncini states unequivocally that "Cancer is a fungus" (in his book by the same name) because he has discovered that a fungus infection similar to candida albicans always forms the basis for every neoplastic (cancerous) formation. And Simoncini has found a very simple, inexpensive and effective therapy for all sorts of cancer, including but not necessarily limited to:

Cancers of the oropharynx, stomach, liver, intestines, spleen, brain, lungs, breasts and skin, peritoneal carcinosis, and tumors of the pancreas, bladder, prostate. pleura and limbs.

The treatment?

Simple baking soda (sodium bicarbonate), which effectively lowers acidity in the body and promotes a more alkaline state, because cancer thrives in an acidic environment, and also is anaerobic (thrives under low-oxygen conditions). Raise the oxygen content in the blood, with fresh air, exercise and sunshine -- which contributes "vitamin" D, an essential hormone necessary for producing or increasing lymphocytes in the blood, which produce interferon -- and cancer cannot thrive.

Sunlight also promotes serum cholesterol, needed by all parts of the body for repairs and tissue creation, lowers bad cholesterol and blood sugar, increases insulin sensitivity, and the oxygen-carrying ability of the blood. It can also increase muscle strength, prevent multiple sclerosis, reduce the risk of heart attack, strengthens bones, prevents osteoporosis, and can even cure tuberculosis, improves mood, reduces cavities, prevents hearing loss, eliminates back pain, regulates hormones, increases libido and boosts fertility in both sexes.

Sunlight alone can also eliminate bacteria from the air, water, and skin, and strengthens the immune system by stimulating neutrophils in the blood -- by exposure to ultraviolet light -- to attack and destroy bacteria. Sunlight also lowers blood pressure, strengthens the immune system and increases oxygen in bodily tissues, all of which helps lower the incidence of cancer. Inhibiting the immune system, on the other hand (which such orthodox treatments as chemo, radiation and surgery all tend to do), increases the incidence of cancer formation.

All of this has been known, and published, since the 1970s in such groundbreaking works as: Health and Light by John N. Ott (1973), Dr. J.H. Tilden's Toxemia Explained (1976), and Sunlight Could Save Your Life, by Dr. Zane R. Kime (1980), among others.

As Tilden said:

"The medical world is struggling to find the cause of cancer. It is the distal [terminal] end of an inflammatory process whose proximal [nearest] beginning may be any irritation. The end is degeneration from a lack of oxygen and nutriment, and, in degenerating, the septic material enters the circulation, setting up chronic septic poisoning called cancer cachexia." (Toxemia Explained, 1981 ed., p. 12).

Cachexia is a condition of weakness of body or mind associated with chronic disease (Reader's Digest Oxford Complete Wordfinder).

Natural activated "vitamin" (hormone) D can convert cancerous cells into normal cells (cellular differentiation), prevents the spread of cancer, regulates cell growth and apoptosis (cellular destruction or death), and suppresses genes responsible for cell reproduction.

The entire scare over sunlight exposure and cancer risks is entirely overblown and misleading. In fact, many serious, fatal forms of cancer, according to many studies (including: cancers of the bladder, colon, breasts, ovaries, pancreas, prostate, testicles, stomach, uterus, esophagus, gall bladder, cervix, including renal, gastric and oral cancers and even Non Hodgkin's lymphoma), are far less prevalent in sunnier climes than northern areas of the country.

In other words, the more optimal your natural sunlight-exposure generated "vitamin" D levels, the lower your risk factor is for all fatal cancers! You won't be hearing this any time soon from all the sun block manufacturers whose profitable sunlight as "killer villain" fiction propaganda sells Americans on avoiding the very thing that could help them most in the fight against the #1 killer disease (cancer), for all those below age 85 (according to the Centers for Disease Control's own annual published statistics).

The less healthful sunlight exposure, the greater the incidence of fatal cancers, which have been growing in numbers and severity every year for the past three decades, while heart disease has steadily declined every year during the same period. Mere coincidence, or is there a direct cause and effect connection between the two?

Racing Pigeon Feed - What You Should Be Adding To Your Pigeon Feed To Increase Their Speed

Water and Honey in Racing Pigeon Feed

There is honey... and more honey.

Nutriment

First of all, we have the ordinary imported honey, which in our country, is mixed with sugar. Then, we have the pure bee-honey which we can get from bee-keepers. Years ago, it was easier to get honey from the bee-keepers than it is to-day. Of late, the number of bee-keepers has declined tremendously. Today, men no longer care to look after the hives, where they have to work daily wearing a mask and heavy gloves!

Racing Pigeon Feed - What You Should Be Adding To Your Pigeon Feed To Increase Their Speed

Actually, we prefer the honey which we obtain from a bee-keeper. In this case, we consider honey a cure, containing excellent qualities. Honey is especially good for improving the breathing, and for the nervous system. It aids digestion, and is a nutriment for people with stomach troubles. Persons who suffer from rheumatism and gout should use honey. The antacid it contains is an excellent source for healing. Honey is free of microbes and contains all the vitamins, which the bees gather together with the pollen of the flowers. Honey does wonders for colds, sore throat, enteritis and the flu - it is not just useful as racing pigeon feed! It is a natural food - healthful, energy-giving, and healing. Not only is it good for children, but also for adults; prevention is better than cure, and with this saying, honey certainly plays an important role.

Being good for humans, it must also be good for pigeons, and we advise all fanciers to give it to their birds as part of their racing pigeon feed, because we ourselves do well with its use. We use it all year round, one teaspoonful in a quart of water. Dissolve the honey first, in a glass of water. Never pour hot water on honey, since this may ruin the vitamins and may also cause fermentation. After a long, hard race, our widowers get all they want to drink of this... one tablespoonful in 500 cc. of water. At least two days a week, and two days before basketing, the honey brew should be in all pigeon lofts. As the well known saying goes: "Try it... you might like it!"

Water and Sugar in Racing Pigeon Feed

Every fancier who wishes to keep up with the modern advances in racing pigeon feed, will make use of glucose-sugar. Glucose - the food for the muscles before the season and after the race, helps the birds to recuperate faster. If the birds are basketed on Friday, then on Wednesday and Thursday add 2 teaspoons full of glucose-sugar to each quart of drinking water. On their return from the race, for one day, add two or three teaspoons full of glucose-sugar to each quart of their drinking water every time your racing pigeons feed. On the next day, clean the drinkers and serve fresh water. When we use tea, after it has cooled off, you may add some glucose-sugar to it.

Some fanciers use sugar cubes (6 to a quart of water), or crystal sugar, using one tablespoonful to a quart of water.

We prefer glucose as part of their racing pigeon feed because it is easier to use, and with us, it has given the best results.

Harmful Effects Of Junk Food

Listed below are some important health complications caused due to sumptuous consumption of junk food.

Lack of energy:

Food

Junk foods do not contain any nutrients that are beneficial to the human body. In most cases, these foods are filled with harmful carbohydrates, fats and cholesterol that do not provide any useful energy. As a result, somebody consuming junk food has reduced level of essential nutrients thereby causing weakness in the body.

Harmful Effects Of Junk Food

Poor Concentration:

One disadvantage of consuming junk food is that it contains high amount of oil and fat. As a result, human body finds this food difficult to digest and needs to spend high amount of blood and enzymes. When a person consumes junk food in excess, a major portion of blood in the body is diverted to the intestine. As a result, the person feels drowsy and suffers with reduced concentration.

Heart Diseases:

Junk foods have been identified as a major cause of heart diseases including myocardial infraction, cardiac arrest and atherosclerosis. This is due to the fact that junk food contains excessive amount of low-density lipoproteins and cholesterol that get deposited on the inner linings of blood vessels. This result in formation of plaques and the heart is required to put an extra effort for pumping blood through the arteries. Presence of fat in the blood also causes reduced oxygen levels. Another harmful factor present in junk foods is excess concentration of sugars and salt. Excessive concentration of sodium ions causes an increased heart blood pressure.

Liver Failure:

Even liver gets damaged due to presence of ingredients such as fat, cholesterol and salt inside the junk foods.

Diabetes:

Junk foods also cause damage to the pancreas resulting in insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus (IDDM).

Caribbean Food - A Little History

The Arawak, Carib, and Taino Indians were the first inhabitants of the Caribbean islands. These first inhabitants occupied the present day islands of British Virgin Islands, Cuba, Dominica, Grenada, Haiti, Trinidad, and Jamaica. Their daily diet consisted of vegetables and fruits such as papaw, yams, guavas, and cassava. The Taino started the process of cooking meat and fish in large clay pots.

The Arawaks are the first people known to make a grate of thin green wood strips on which they slowly cooked meat, allowing it to be enhanced by the flavor of the wood. This grate was called a barbacoa, and the word we know today as barbeque is taken from this early Indian cooking method.

Food

The Carib Indians added more spice to their food with hot pepper sauces, and also added lemon and lime juice to their meat and fish recipes. The Caribs are said to have made the first pepper pot stew. No recipes exist since every time the Indians made the dish, they would always add new ingredients. The Carib had a big impact on early Caribbean history, and the Caribbean sea was named after this tribe.

Caribbean Food - A Little History

Then the Caribbean became a crossroads for the world . . .

Once the Europeans brought Africans slaves into the region, the slaves diet consisted mostly of food the slave owners did not want to eat. So the slaves had to be inventive, and they blended their traditional African foods with staples found on the islands. The Africans introduced okra, callaloo, fish cakes, saltfish, ackee, pudding and souse, mangos, and the list goes on.

Most present day Caribbean island locals eat a present diet that is reflective of the main ingredients of original early African dishes, and includes cassava, sweet potatoes, yams, plantains, bananas and corn meal.

African men were hunters in their homeland, and often away from home for long periods of time. They would cook spicy pork over hot coals, and this tradition was refined by the early slaves in Jamaica. The technique is known today as "jerk" cooking , and the secret involves a slow meat cooking process. Jamaica is famous for jerk chicken and pork, and you'll find jerk all over the island.

After slavery was abolished, the Europeans went to India and China for labor, and more cooking styles were introduced. Much of the Indian cooking culture remains alive and well in the Caribbean of today with the introduction of curried meats and curry powder. Indians call it kari podi, and we have come to know this pungent flavor as curry.

The Chinese introduced rice, which is always a staple in home cooked island meals. The Chinese also introduced mustard, and the early Portuguese sailors introduced the popular codfish.

Most visitors to the Caribbean have no idea that the fruit trees and fruits so familiar to the islands were introduced by the early Spanish explorers. The fruit trees and fruits brought from Spain include orange, lime, ginger, plantains, figs, date palms, sugar cane, grapes, tamarinds and coconuts.

Even the Polynesian islands play an important role in Caribbean cooking. Most of us remember the movie "Mutiny on the Bounty", but do not know that particular ship carried breadfruit, which was loaded on board from the islands of Tahiti and Timor. In the movie the crew took over the ship, forced the captain into a small boat to fend on his own, and they threw the breadfruit, which they considered "strange fruit" overboard. Another ship was more successful in bringing breadfruit from Polynesia to Jamaica and the St Vincent and the Grenadines. Breadfruit is a staple diet in the current day Caribbean

America is responsible for introducing beans, corn, squash, potatoes, tomatoes, and chili pepper to the Caribbean. In fact these particular foods had never been seen in Asia, Europe or Africa, so America actually introduced these foods the rest of the world via the Caribbean.

So it's no wonder Caribbean cooking is so rich and creative with the flavors of Africa, India, and China, along with Spanish, Danish, Portuguese, French and British influences. Food served in the Caribbean islands have been influenced by the cultures of the world, but each island adds its own special flavor and cooking technique.

Iron As a Plant Nutrient - In What Circumstances Should Iron Fertilizer Be Used?

I was recently asked to give a consultation on the state of the plants in a private garden. I live and garden in central Israel, which has a typical Mediterranean climate, similar to places like southern California, south west Australia, and central Chile. I was inspecting the plants together with the homeowner, and while looking at a citrus tree, the lady suddenly said, "Oh and please show me how to apply iron fertilizer - I'm not very happy about having to use it every two weeks or so".

She had apparently been "advised" by a neighbor's gardener that the fruit trees should be so treated during the growing season. I looked again at the tree and what I saw were lovely dark green healthy leaves and plenty of decent looking fruit hanging on the branches. Her remark typifies to some extent, some of the misconceptions common amongst home gardeners on the important subject of plant nutrition.

Nutrient

Iron is one of the twelve minerals essential to plant growth and development. It is a micro-element, meaning that the plant needs it in relatively small quantities, as opposed to the macro-elements, Nitrogen, Phosphorous and Potassium, which are required and consumed in larger amounts. Iron is rarely absent from soils, at least in dry climates, but a high soil pH, meaning alkaline conditions, prevent it dissolving in the soil water, thereby rendering it unavailable to the plants' roots.

Iron As a Plant Nutrient - In What Circumstances Should Iron Fertilizer Be Used?

The clearest sign of iron deficiency (a condition known as chlorosis) is leaves whose blades are yellow, but whose veins are green. If however, the leaves are perfectly green, the indication is that iron is definitely not lacking. Applying iron fertilizer when it is not needed is not simply unnecessary, but liable to be damaging as well, since excessive micro-elements in the soil water can actually be toxic to plants.

Significant iron deficiency will seriously retard the plants, but the idea that fertilizer should be added to the soil in order to pre-empt the possibility of chlorosis is utterly false. Iron fertilizer should never be applied unless there are definite signs of chlorosis. This often occurs when building rubble has been buried in the soil, or when plants are close to a wall, and the lime in the cement residues raises the pH to levels where minerals crystallize and cannot dissolve. In general, the best way of securing soil conditions whereby the micro-elements are readily available to the plants, is to periodically add compost or humus to the soil, as this balances the pH towards neutral, (neither too acidic nor too alkaline) at least in the alkaline soils common to most dry climates.

19th Century Food And Drink

Eat, drink and be merry! That was the cry of the Victorian era and the people of that period attacked their meals with great gusto! A revolution in stoves, cookware and kitchen gadgets, combined with the discovery of canning and food sterilization techniques, open up endless possibilities for the motivated domestic servant who held the position of cook.

Eating was an event in the Victorian home. Even the breakfast meal featured a variety of fruits, scones, omelettes, bacon and more. From the ritual pouring of afternoon tea, complete with its own elaborate rituals and opportunities to show off the lady's finest silver, china and linen, to elaborate banquets attended my noblemen and their guests there was always something on the stove in a Victorian kitchen.

Food

In reality, the Victorian menu wasn't terribly different from what is served in homes today or at least in the homes where someone still cooks. Meat, fish and poultry were common and fresh or canned vegetables were served with most meals. Winter and autumn meals usually included hearty soups and stews while chicken and lighter dishes prevailed in the summertime.

19th Century Food And Drink

Holidays meals were special celebrations and called for the finest dishes including Roast Mutton, Pork or Turkey, Boiled Beef, Stewed Rabbits, Plum Pudding and Mince Pies. Baked good were plentiful and cooks were especially prized for their dessert-making skills.

Most evening meals were served in courses with raw or baked Oysters a popular appetizer. The second course featured cream soups or plain bouillon along with a serving of baked or broiled fish. The main course, usually roasted poultry, pork or beef, accompanied by a variety of savoury vegetables, fresh baked bread, and frequently some pasta, was presented by the serving maid in grand fashion and to the great delight of those seated around the table.

The dessert course featured several puddings, cakes and highly prized specialities such as Nesselrode and Plum Pudding. Of course a variety of cheeses and fresh fruit were often served when available.

Wine was not particularly popular, but beer was and continues to be a favourite beverage in England. But it wasn't all alcohol in the Victorian home. Lemonade, root beer, hot tea and, yes, Perrier were also popular beverages.

Yes, the Victorians loved to eat and drink. We have them to thank for a long running tradition of good food served with gusto and a pint of beer!

Nutrition - Ten Reasons For Proper Nutrition

Nutrition is what we provide to our bodies, in the form of food and drink, to support life within our body's cells. It is what we eat and drink, which is known as our diet. People provide themselves with all kinds of nutrition, and not all of it is beneficial to supporting life. Experts recommend that we eat and drink certain nutrients for good reasons. In this article, we discuss ten reasons for giving your body proper nutrition.

Ten reasons for giving your body proper nutrition are:

Nutrition

1. Reduce the risk of certain illnesses.

Nutrition - Ten Reasons For Proper Nutrition

Most people want to have the chance of a long healthy life, and therefore want to reduce illnesses like heart disease, diabetes, osteoporosis and certain cancer. Proper nutrition goes a long way towards reducing the risks.

2. Improve our Immune System

By taking certain nutrients, we build up our immune system, and are less susceptible to viruses that other people have.

3. Get Fit

If we are unfit already, it's a real challenge to exercise because of the lack of energy. So, if we feed our bodies with proper nutrition, we'll get more energy and feel like exercising to get fit.

4. Have Fun and Do the things we Want to do

If we are on a good diet most of the time, we can do new and strenuous activities like rock climbing or wind surfing, or scuba diving, things that take a lot of energy and strength. Having the right nutrients in our bodies, builds our strength and confidence to do different things.

5. Look Good and Healthy

When taking good nutrition, we look good. Our bodies are trim and lean, and our skin looks clear and healthy, nails are stronger, and our hair looks shinier.

6. Feel Good

I believe this is the most important. With good nutrition, we feel much better because our cells are getting the nutrients they require.

7. Improve the Quality of Our Lives

When we look and feel good, we have a lot more confidence. It's easier to get the job we want or to have a successful business, or just to do the things we love doing.

8. Learn More Easily

Healthy children learn more easily, and this is shown by research studies. I believe this is true for adults also, and that learning is a fun part of life at any age.

9. Improve Vision

Good nutrition improves our vision, including night vision.

10. Improve our Memories

Our memories will be improved if we take certain nutrients, and this will improve our working life, or make it more fun in relationships with other people, to remember things we've heard or read before.

By reading about these ten reasons for good nutrition, I hope you were inspired to learn about proper nutrition and to think about what you eat and drink.

Nutrition, Supplementation and Acupuncture Support For Cerebral Palsy

Nutritional needs are determined by a few key factors. First, the overall stress burden on the body, second the digestive ability of the body and third previous exposure to diminished nutrient quality. People living with cerebral palsy have an increased need for adequate nutrition because of the increased stress burden of the body and because the multiple interventions common among people with this condition create an environment of diminished digestive ability. Essential nutrition must begin at birth and then be considered a critical part of all ongoing care. There are five basic rules of optimal nutrition that can be paired with four basic supplementation guidelines and the use of acupuncture that will magnify and improve overall health, energy, inflammatory response and quality of life in most people living with CP. The guidelines do not vary much from the optimal nutritional needs of all people; however, when there is a greater need in the body, it is essential for good nutrition to be applied with great care. If deficiencies of basic nutrients develop, or digestive inflammation sets in, it is harder to treat when multiple problems present at one time. Applying good nutrition from birth prevents having to manage consequences later and will provide essential inflammatory control.

The deficits associated with CP are often static, but additional problems can develop when malfunction of one area affects another part of the body, this is where nutritional support is essential. Common areas of increased stress and therefore increased need are adrenal glands, large intestine and the immune system. As the stress burden grows, so does the nutrient need, and then the cycle just grows. Childhood nutrition greatly impacts lifelong health factors.

Nutrition

Children function best with breastfeeding but that is not always possible. In situations where breastfeeding cannot be done, making formula by following the guidelines of the Weston Price foundation will provide the most significant advantages for any child. Traditional store bought formula often contains sugars, processed fats and additives that are detrimental to digestive function and may set up a pattern of digestive inflammation and impaired nutrient absorption that can later lead to increased sensitivity to foods.

Nutrition, Supplementation and Acupuncture Support For Cerebral Palsy

Digestive inflammation is the result of long term ingestion of foods that the body has difficulty digesting. Often the symptoms of inflammation are masked as other conditions and get misinterpreted but generally can be classified as food sensitivities. Food sensitivities are different from food allergies as they are more of an inflammatory response to a food that happens with mild symptoms that can then grow into large scale tissue inflammation. The most common sensitivities are milk, egg, wheat, soy, corn and peanut. Once sensitivities set in, inflammation results which can generate a condition called leaky gut. Leaky gut occurs when the cells lining the digestive tract become inflamed and as a result, the junctions between cells expand and food particles pass into the blood stream before being fully broken down. These larger particles cause an immune response because the body perceives them as it would a virus or bacteria. This immune response produces inflammation. If this process occurs everyday multiple times per day, the result is chronic low level inflammation that can lead to digestive symptoms of gas, bloating, constipation, diarrhea, and indigestion. Other parts of the body can also have symptoms that relate to this such as behavior problems of anger, easy frustration, bed wetting, sleep issues, frequent colds and infections, allergies, fatigue and diminished muscle function and strength. In order to maintain adequate digestive function, the right foods must be eaten, and proper support nutrients must be used.

In order to maximize nutritional absorption, foods consumed must be close to their source, produced with very little processing and high quality. All food consumed must still resemble what it comes from, such as an apple or an egg. Foods should be free of preservatives and additives as most compounds used to preserve foods have been linked with adverse effects on the nervous system and brain. Organic foods are always better than non organic in order to minimize exposure to chemicals and pesticides used in large scale commercial farming. Although guidelines will vary depending on the individual body chemistry and needs of an individual, the basics remain the same. Protein should be from either vegetable source like beans, dark green leafy vegetables, nuts and seeds or animal sources not treated with hormones and minimally processed. Eggs are an essential source of good quality fats and cholesterol needed to produce hormones. Good quality eggs should have an orange yolk of a vibrant color. Fats are the cornerstone of long term health; the most ideal fats are raw coconut oil, cold pressed olive oil, and butter from organic milk, full fat raw milk and lard from pasture raised animals. Fats that will perpetuate inflammatory cycles and disrupt health are vegetable fats like canola and corn oil. Carbohydrates in the diet should ideally come from vegetable sources and when grains are used they must be in their whole unbleached form and ideally sprouted in origin. Nutrition is about chemistry, the way that nutrients interact, their levels, and how they get into and become incorporated into cellular function are all key to they impact the body. For most people supplementation is essential and when applied properly greatly improves overall health and digestive function. A few properly applied nutrients can make a significant difference.

There are four key categories of supplementation essential to everyone. First, a good quality multi, that is easily absorbable, supports cellular function and antioxidant status. Second, an essential fatty acid such as fermented cod liver oil, third a probiotic ideally containing HSO, soil based organisms, and fourth an antioxidant support formula with specific attention to increasing glutathione levels. Incorporating good quality supplements from these four categories will provide basic support and enhance long term health and inflammatory control. As proper nutritional routines are implemented, adding acupuncture will magnify and increase efficacy in controlling inflammation and enhancing digestive function.

Acupuncture dates back to the Stone Age. It originates in China and can be used to treat all types of health conditions. Acupuncture works by stimulating better organ, nervous system, muscle, and hormonal function by using points on energetic pathways called meridians. Meridians are well defined energetic pathways that relate to organ and nervous system function. On each meridian there are numerous points, with very precise locations where in treatment needles are inserted. Each point has a set of functions and when combined with other acupuncture points produces an effect changing body function. In the case of chronic inflammation as the result of nutrient deficiencies, acupuncture helps to eliminate inflammation, restore normal digestive function and increase nutrient absorption. Acupuncture treatments can also be used to improve muscle tone and strength, nerve conductivity and balance emotional responses. Generally, the effect of acupuncture is achieved through multiple treatments, however, each person is unique and treatment plans will vary.

Properly applied nutritional and acupuncture therapy will make dramatic enhancements to any health plan. People living with CP have certain functional challenges, but poor nutrition and uncontrolled inflammation could turn functional challenges into global dysfunction. Proper nutritional support prevents system stress from becoming dysfunction and disease and enhances life quality.

7 Proven Weight Loss Tips For Teenagers

I'm not going to try to sell you something. All I'm going to do is give you the facts about how to lose weight through safe and successful tips. The rest is up to you.

The First and Most Important Rule of Teenage Weight Loss

Nutrition

1. Eat Healthily! Starvation is not the Solution

7 Proven Weight Loss Tips For Teenagers

Every so often we hear about a teenage girl starving herself to reduce weight quickly in order to attend a special function, a dance or a prom. The person that I have in mind was about eighteen years old, let say her name was Brandi. Brandi wanted to loss approximately 22 pounds in 5 weeks to attend a wedding as a bridesmaid. She wanted to be noticed by by her friends, and in particular one boy.

During that time frame the most weight Brandi could have expect to lose and still maintain her health was about 10 to 12 pounds. In her effort and without getting her doctor's advice decides to starve herself. So she went off and starved herself for until her desired weight was accomplished.

What happened? Later, I learned she lost about 8 pounds within 2 weeks. During that time she developed spots all over her face and body. Yes, you guessed right, Brandi was not able to attend the wedding as a bridesmaid. Brandi spent several weeks under the care of her doctor undoing the damage she had done to her body by starving herself. Teenagers, let this incident be a warning to you! "When we stop eating, we stop giving our bodies the nutrition it requires to stay healthy and it begins t malfunction."

2. Healthy Eating is Better Than "Dieting"

The primary reason why adults experience weight problems and eventually become ill is due to them undertaking drastic measures or unhealthy weight loss diets during their teenage years. Teen Diets should not be considered until their physical growth has been completed This completion in teenagers usually occurs around 18 years of age.

Until that time teenage weight loss should not be considered without consulting your doctor. He will recommend dietitian who would be able to recommend a safe and healthy diet. A diet which would permit healthy growth and weight loss control.

3. Dieting Can Causes Health Problems in Teens?

Yes, dieting can cause health problems in teens. During your teen years, between the ages of 12-17 years, approximately 90% of your body frame structure and bone mass of an adult is laid down as a foundation. This not the time to be depriving your body of the essential vitamins which it requires like calcium, vitamins C&D.

During these years, even a short period of "strict dieting" could lead to a low bone density level. Low bone density weakens your bones in your later years; they become fragile and are susceptible to fractures and breakage.

Teen Dieting can also lead to low levels of frolic acid and iron, both of which may prevent you from becoming anemic. An anemic individual tends to be constantly tire. Their intellectual performance becomes impaired.

There are other health problems which are associated with teens undertakings "strict diets", but there are too many to mention here.

4. What Does Healthy Eating Really Mean?

Teens, as long as you eat a variety of foods, from the 5 major food groups (fruits, vegetables, grains [rice, pasta, oats etc] lean meats, dairy, low fats) in the right portions you should get all the nutrition you need.

5. Are Certain Foods are Off-Limits?

No. healthy eating doesn't mean depriving yourself of higher-calorie foods, like ice cream, pizza, cheeseburgers etc. You can enjoy all these foods and others in moderation.

6. Snack on Fruits to Satisfy Your Sweet Tooth

Take snacks of freshly slice fruit to school with you. You can also include some Walnuts or Brazilian nuts to munch on

7. General Rule of Eating Well

Make sure that half the plate contains vegetables and the remaining half divided equally between protein (meat, eggs, beans) and carbohydrates (rice, pasta, potatoes). When eating pizza, go easy on the cheese and pepperoni an heavy on vegetables and fruit.

Some time teens trying to lose weight encounter severe hunger pangs; in these situation they may consider a supplement to their weight loss program by using a natural appetite suppressant pill like Hoodia Gordonii Plus which is virtually 100% pure

Nutrition for the Barrel Horse

Nutrition is very important when it comes to barrel horses. They should not be fed the same as a horse that stays in a pasture and gets ridden a few times a month. Barrel horses are athletes and need adequate nutrition.

Hay

Nutrition

All horses need roughage either in the form of grass or hay. Some horses may need both if there is little grass or the grass has low nutritional value. Roughage should make up most of the horse's diet. Feed comes second and should be used to balance the diet. The best way to determine what your horse needs is by having the veterinarian run blood tests once a year to see if your horse is deficient in any way. Testing your hay is also a good way to know exactly what your horse is getting. Take a sample of your hay to an agricultural extension office and they can usually have it tested for free. This gives you a list of all of the qualities and nutritional value in your hay. From there, take the blood tests from your veterinarian and determine what kind of feed and supplements are needed.

Nutrition for the Barrel Horse

Good quality grass hay is the best hay to use for most of your horse's diet. Alfalfa can be fed, but is much higher in protein and can not be fed in large amounts like grass hay. One or two flakes of alfalfa hay can be fed per day compared to three or four flakes of grass hay. If you choose to feed alfalfa hay along with grass hay, you won't need as much grain. Also, if your feed is a lower percentage feed, like 10%, alfalfa can be fed to make up the difference needed in your barrel horse.

Feed

Feed is a part of a barrel horse's fuel along with quality hay. Barrel horses are ridden a lot and need energy and stamina when on the road and when training at home. A feed with 10% - 12% protein is good for a mature barrel horse, but is not adequate for a futurity barrel horse. Younger horses need a higher percentage, such as 14% - 16%. This doesn't mean you need a different feed, but the percentage should be gotten through other natural sources such as alfalfa. Always follow the feeding recommendations on the bag as to how much to feed each horse. Feed should be fed by weight. Each horse needs a different amount of feed according to their weight and performance level.

Feed can be found in the form of grains and pellets. Know what is in the feed before making a decision for your barrel horse. Many feed manufacturers today offer comparable feeds in both grain mix and pellet forms. Plain oats are not adequate for a barrel horse. A barrel horse needs more fuel than plain oats can offer. Choose a grain or pellet with a good protein percentage and one that is easily digestible. Pellet feeds were not easily digestible until recently. They are now made to be broken down easily once eaten. This reduces the chance of colic and other digestive problems. Some horses may prefer a sweet grain mix because of the taste, but can usually be slowly switched to a pellet feed if you find that is the better choice for you.

Supplements

Supplements are very common in the barrel horse industry. There is a supplement available for just about every thing. From hooves and coat to energy and weight builders, supplements can play a large part in your horse's every day diet.

Choosing a supplement should be a decision made after talking to your veterinarian about your horse, not using the newest thing on the market because a top barrel racer endorses the product. Supplements that are not needed usually won't hurt, but can get very expensive. Supplements that claim to make your horse a better performer, faster or able to win more are simply not true. Every horse will react slightly different with different supplements.

Providing your horse with a balanced diet is the start of a good barrel racing routine. Good nutrition gives your horse the edge he needs to perform to the best of his abilities.

Nutrition - Some Nutrition Facts and Signs of Lack of Nutrition

Do you know if you are lack of nutrition? This could be the question that most people are concerned about but cannot answer. In fact, our body will send out signals when we do not have enough nutrition; thus, it is good we know what these signals are and what they mean.

Bleeding gum and skin ecchymosis
Most likely is due to lack of vitamin C. Should take in more fresh fruits and vegetables daily; best to take in about 500 gram of vegetables and 2 to 3 fruits everyday. As cooking can damage nutrition and enzyme, ideally, take in these vegetables as salad. Some vitamin C rich vegetables are pea sprouts, cabbages, and green peppers. Fruits with high vitamin C contents are oranges, lemons, strawberries, and persimmons.

Nutrition

Chapped mouth and lips
Most likely is due to lack of vitamin B2 and B3. Chicken egg yolk and milk are rich in B2. It is ideal to drink 250 ml of milk and take 1 chicken egg daily. Mushrooms and nuts are rich in B3.

Nutrition - Some Nutrition Facts and Signs of Lack of Nutrition

Deteriorating taste buds
Lack of zinc can be the main reason. Take more apple, egg, tofu, soybean, cabbage, peanut, and walnut.

Dried hair, hair loss, hair breakage, muscle atrophy
If it is muscle atrophy concern, most likely is caused by lack of protein and calorie. If it is related to hair problems mentioned above, it can mean the body is lack of protein, calorie, fatty acid, and zinc. Take more sea water fish, eggs, and milk.

Glossitis - tongue diseases
Insufficient vitamin B complex can be the root cause. There are various kind of vitamins under Vitamin B complex: vitamin B 15, B1, B2, B3, B4, B5, B6, B10, B11, B12, B13, B15, B17, Bc, Bt, and Bx. Some examples of vitamin B complex food source are whole-grain cereals, brown rice, green leafy vegetables, potatoes, and peanuts.

Dried skin and poor night vision
Main reason can be due to insufficient vitamin A. Take more carrots. As vitamin A is soluble in oil but not water, it is an amazing fact that stir frying carrot with tinge of vegetable oil allows vitamin A to be absorbed into body more easily than eating carrot as raw.

Nutrition - Some Nutrition Facts and Signs of Lack of Nutrition

Many of us know the importance of nutrition during pregnancy. However, most of us often ignore on the importance of nutrition before pregnancy, which lack of nutrition during this phase can result in defects of newborns. Follow the link for information on getting good health naturally.

Nutrition, Dieting and the "New" Middle Age

You've heard all the talk about how 50 is the "new" 30 and 60 is the "new" 40, haven't you? It would be great to believe this to be true, and in many ways, it is. Since I'm 52 (well, almost done being 52), I do feel strong, healthy and think I can run around, eat and drink like I'm still 32. But I also had my first child at 32, and I promise you, I am certainly NOT interested in seeing that type of activity at any "new" age.

One of the reasons for this type of hype is that the media is saying what we want to hear. Who wants to hear about being old? I'm still having trouble rolling the words "Middle aged" over my lips. But the reality is-I am 52, I'm not 32. To paraphrase Dr. Seuss, my body is in pretty good shape, for the shape that it's in. But my nutrient needs are changing, as is my body, and I must be realistic about accepting those changes.

Nutrition

As a nutritionist, I know I have to pay more attention to the types of foods I eat. There are many nutrients found in whole foods, and I will almost always recommend folks eat the whole food rather than take the supplement. This is because most of the time, there are other components in the food that make the body absorb the nutrient of interest more efficiently.

Nutrition, Dieting and the "New" Middle Age

One nutrient in particular I'd like to discuss is calcium. We must make sure we're getting enough calcium as we...mature. I know, as least for me, my bones won't stay as strong as they used to without an effort on my part. Since I don't lift weights (actually, my neck strains when I carry heavy bags of food into the house), to reduce my risk for bone disease I need to make sure I get enough calcium.

Dairy products are probably the best way to get calcium into your system. I recommend low fat dairy, especially if weight is a concern for you. One percent milk is sufficient if you like milk and want to watch your weight. I have heard skim milk referred to as "blue water" once too many times to ever recommend it to anyone. Besides, the difference between skim and 1% is only 18 calories-and for many people; those 18 calories, for some reason, make a big difference in taste.

Also, dairy products contain other substances that help the body absorb calcium more efficiently. Lactose, also known as milk sugar, helps increase the body's ability to use calcium. For people who are lactose intolerant, low lactose milk is just as good. It simply contains a different form of lactose, and is easier to tolerate.

For many reason, lots of people don't like, or can't consume, dairy products. There certainly are other food alternatives for calcium, including enriched soy products, and greens such as kale and chard. Sometimes the calcium in vegetables products isn't always available to our bodies, because it is tied up with other plant chemicals in the food, and our systems can't use it.

This is where calcium supplements come in. Don't forget, these pills do not REPLACE good eating, they are to SUPPLEMENT your diet? However, since calcium is one particularly tricky nutrient for many people, especially women, to consume, supplements may be a good alternative.

There are many different types of supplements on the market. The two major types are: calcium carbonate and calcium citrate. Calcium carbonate tends to be less expensive, but it needs to be consumed WITH meals, and for some folks, it may cause constipation. The calcium chews contain calcium carbonate. Many people like this supplement, but you must only take one at a time. First of all, chew contains 500 mg-which is the maximum the body can absorb at one time. Second of all, if you start popping these like candy, you will find yourself in the market for a strong laxative! So be sure to watch how much you take at one time.

Calcium citrate is the other popular calcium supplement. This type of calcium can be consumed anytime of day and it is not constipating. However, it may be more expensive. As with the calcium carbonate, don't consume more than 500 mg at a time, b/c, again, that's all your body can handle at one time. Sometimes these tables come in 300 mg doses. If you only are able to take them once/day, then go ahead and take 2, understanding your body won't be using the entire amount.

Again, if you are able to get all your calcium from foods, great. But as we, shall we say, mature, our bodies change, and many of us can't handle dairy products like we used to. A good substitute is calcium supplements.

Now, if I could figure out what to take for my, my,,,memory issues, THEN I'd be in great shape!
